Less material. Reliable corrosion protection.

The packaging industry is undergoing a transformation: material efficiency, resource utilization, and high-performance packaging solutions are now at the heart of modern production processes. More and more companies are therefore turning to thickness-reduced PE films to reduce material consumption – without compromising stability or product protection.

Thanks to innovative extrusion technologies and optimized polymer formulations, PE films can now be produced with reduced material thickness while still meeting the demanding requirements of industrial applications. One example is the CLEAR PAK® 5000 XR – a modern VCI film that combines reliable corrosion protection with reduced material consumption.

What does “thickness-reduced VCI film” mean?

A thickness-reduced VCI film is a packaging solution based on polyethylene whose material thickness has been specifically reduced. The aim is to reduce material consumption while maintaining the required technical properties. Thanks to modern manufacturing technologies, the film remains mechanically stable, tear-resistant and puncture-resistant.
The benefits at a glance:

  • reduced material consumption
  • lower weight and therefore optimized transport processes,
  • reliable product protection through high-performance material formulations.

The result is an economical packaging solution with a high level of functionality for a wide range of industrial applications.

Innovation meets modern packaging technology:
CLEAR PAK® 5000 XR

With CLEAR PAK® 5000 XR , Daubert Cromwell demonstrates how modern VCI technology can be combined with a thickness-reduced PE film. The VCI film (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors) actively protects metal components against corrosion. Special active ingredients form an invisible protective layer on the metal surface, reliably protecting components during storage and transport.

💡 Key features:

  • Dynamic release of active ingredients – adapts to ambient humidity.
  • 100% nitrite-free and developed in accordance with applicable legal requirements.
  • Protective effect on both sides.
  • Also available as CLEAR PAK® 5000 RC with at least 30% recycled content .
  • Suitable for warm components and can be used directly after production.

In this way, CLEAR PAK® 5000 XR combines reduced material consumption with reliable corrosion protection.

🧩 The general benefits of thickness-reduced VCI/PE films

1) Material efficiency

  • Up to 30% less material consumption – depending on the application and film design.
  • Lower packaging weight.
  • Efficient use of material while maintaining consistent protective properties.

2) Cost efficiency

  • Reduced material consumption can lower material costs.
  • Lower weight can help optimize transport and logistics processes.
  • Efficient packaging solutions support cost-effective production processes.

3) Technical properties

  • High tear and puncture resistance.
  • Reliable sealing seams for automated packaging processes.
  • Reliable product protection despite reduced material thickness.

4) Energy efficiency

  •   A lower film thickness can reduce material consumption in the extrusion process.
  • Using less material also means lower melt volumes.
  • Depending on the application, lower packaging weight and reduced material volumes can support more efficient transport and storage processes.

5) Recycling

  • Mono-material PE films can be recycled depending on the respective disposal and recycling system.
  • CLEAR PAK® 5000 RC additionally contains at least 30% recycled material.

⚙️ Typical fields of application

  • Metalworking
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Automotive and supplier industry
  • Export packaging
  • Logistics

Especially where components are sensitive to humidity, temperature fluctuations or long transport routes, the combination of thickness-reduced PE film and VCI technology provides reliable corrosion protection. For large components, machines or export packaging, Ströbel offers the right solution: Our VCI covers, box liners and side-gusseted bags are individually manufactured and reliably protect metal parts during storage and transport.

👉 Note: The technology of thickness-reduced PE film is not limited to VCI films. Ströbel can also implement this material optimization for other PE films – for example, ESD films, transparent LDPE films or other PE-based packaging solutions. This means that users outside the field of corrosion protection can also benefit from the advantages of this innovative material optimization. Case Study: Material Efficiency and Corrosion Protection

A metalworking company in southern Germany faced the challenge of transporting high-quality steel and aluminum components over several weeks and storing them in different climate zones. Until then, conventional VCI films and oil-based corrosion protection agents had been used.

  • high material consumption,
  • time-consuming cleaning of the parts before further processing,
  • as well as rising disposal and energy costs.

In close cooperation with Ströbel, the company decided to use the thickness-reduced VCI film CLEAR PAK® 5000 XR. The introduction was carried out gradually, starting with the packaging of components for overseas transport.

Clear benefits became apparent after only a short period of time:

  • The protective effect on both sides ensured consistent corrosion protection, even at high humidity.
  • The thinner film thickness made it possible to reduce material consumption by almost 30%.
  • The lower weight resulted in lower disposal costs and CO₂ savings of several hundred kilograms per year.
  • Thanks to its suitability for warm components, packaging time in production was significantly reduced.

The decisive advantage: In this specific application, transport and disposal processes could also be optimized. Since the changeover, no corrosion damage has occurred during storage or transport. Switching to thickness-reduced VCI film therefore not only delivered measurable benefits, but also improved process reliability and customer acceptance.

🧾 Conclusion: Thickness-reduced PE/VCI films

… are a modern solution for companies looking to reduce material consumption while meeting high requirements for product protection and process reliability. In combination with CLEAR PAK® 5000 XR, they create a high-performance VCI packaging solution that combines reliable corrosion protection with a material-efficient packaging concept. Whether in mechanical engineering, the automotive industry or export packaging – using less material while maintaining a consistently high level of protection offers economic benefits and supports efficient packaging processes.
