Electrostatic charges are caused by friction between two materials, and this in turn results in electrostatic discharges, as in the aforementioned example with the car door

Volume conductive films are endowed with conductive properties through the use of a carbon additive (soot), which absorbs electrostatic discharges. The surface resistance of these films ranges from 104 to 105 ohms. Owing to the volume conductivity of this type of film, it should be used solely for low-sensitivity components as it is permeable to voltage spikes.
