BUBBLE WRAP DAY
A simple, small "pop"
Have you ever opened a parcel and been more excited about the packaging than the contents? The little air bubbles that make a satisfying ‘pop’ every time you press them are a true classic - a material that is as useful as it is entertaining.
Every last Monday in January, a special day is dedicated to this packaging miracle: Bubble Wrap Day. This holiday has been celebrated since 2001 and puts the spotlight on a product that not only offers practical benefits, but can also bring a little moment of joy.
THE CREATION OF AN INCREDIBLE PACKAGING MATERIAL: Bubble wrap has a surprising history. It was originally intended to be used as washable plastic wallpaper, but the experiment by engineers Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes took an unexpected turn. Instead of ending up on walls, the material quickly proved to be an ideal packaging material. It was patented as early as 1959 under the name ‘Bubble Wrap’ and began its worldwide success story...
How does the air get into the film?
Bubble wrap is manufactured using state-of-the-art processes. The material consists of two layers of welded polyethylene. The liquid plastic is moulded at a temperature of around 200 degrees onto a negative roll, which is provided with indentations for the subsequent dimples. A vacuum draws the plastic into the recesses and a second sheet of film is applied with counter-pressure to seal the air in the chambers. The two-layer bubble wrap is finished.
For heavier or more sensitive goods such as glassware, three-layer bubble wrap is produced by applying a further layer on top of the bubble wrap. Additional customisations such as antistatic materials or lamination with fleece or paper considerably extend the possible uses of the film.
Bubble wrap is one of the most popular packaging materials for good reason. Its properties make it a real all-rounder.
